Daffodils are smiling and dancing, the sky is blue, and the lovely Mr Sunshine has finally arrived. Florence (our bread truck) is getting ready to head up to Rheged for one of the most inspirational food, art, and educational events of the year.

Make sure you don’t miss out and pencil this in your diaries – Saturday 20 April 2024. We’ll be joining a great team of foodies and farmers (35 in total) to celebrate this amazing event. This is one of the best events of the year and is always a great way to kick start the sunnier season ahead.

Have you been before? If not, it’s time to swing by and join in the fun. There’s something for everyone to enjoy. For the dads, a fantastic outdoor store, food hall and gallery; for the mums, everything to want, corner-to-corner of inspiration. Gorgeous shops, (one of Catherine’s favourites) the artisan’s craft store, celebrating artists of our region, pottery, and affordable gifts that inspire the heart. A lovely café, featuring homemade food from local producers, it’s simply fantastic. And what about the kiddies? Yep, they have their corner of heaven, a state-of-the-art indoor play and children’s crafting. Rheged has simply thought of everything and everyone.
Aubin Adams (aged 23 months), a rather wise toddler who is an expert on children’s play areas, thinks Rheged have the best indoor play area in region!! Well, Aubin must know and who would question a 23-month-old toddler?
Kendal Farmers Market and mates are heading up north where the food is good, conversations plentiful, and lots of great workshops to get involved in, and to top it off – entry is free.
You can taste your way around the food market; it might be your first and most certainly won’t be your last – you’ll love it. Bring your four-legged furry friends, a shopping basket, and let us help find something for the weekend and weekday meals ahead. Cheesemongers, butchers, wine producers, and, of course, your baker. We’ll have our new Northern Bliss-cuit on taster, Cumbrian Teacakes, Sourdough and a Barista station which will be open from 9.00 am. Exciting!
Throughout the day, there will be three free talks in the lecture theatre, as well as a ticketed panel debate, screening of Six Inches of Soil and chances to win a special hamper, (both in aid of our mental health charity – Growing Well).

11.00 am – Outdoor Fire Cooking for Gatherings with Jim Metcalf
Join Jim Metcalf (Head of Food for the Westmorland Family), as he encourages you to elevate your Summer BBQ with new techniques and recipes. With 10 years’ experience of cooking with a wood-fired oven, Jim will share how to choose a quality cut, experiment with marinades, enhance sides and salads, chargrill seasonal vegetables, as well providing top tips on stress free preparation. Free entry
12.00 pm – Epona- Introducing a New Piece of Land Art in the Lune Gorge
Adrian Lochhead (Director of Eden Arts and Tom Lloyd from Fell Pony Adventures), introduces a new project working towards an ambitious piece of land art in the Lune Gorge, inspired by the heritage of the local Fell Ponies and the area itself. A talk, film snippets and discussion around the concept and a new display in the retail street area of Rheged. He will also showcase the work carried out in local schools and the location of the proposed land art. Free entry
1 pm – Wild Fell: Fighting for Nature on a Lake District Hill Farm
Join Lee Schofield (Author and RSPB Site Manager), as he gives his personal account of a decade working to breathe life back into Wild Haweswater – 3,000 hectares of moorland, mountain, meadow and stream in the eastern Lake District National Park. Free entry
2.30 pm – 5 pm – Six Inches of Soil Film Screening plus Panel Debate, in aid of Growing Well, Cumbria Mental Health Charity
Local food production, healthy soil and inspiring farmers come to the fore of this brand new film – Six Inches of Soil. It tells the inspiring story of young British farmers standing up against the industrial food system and transforming the way they produce food – to heal the soil, our health and provide for local communities.
This special screening will include a panel debate (held after the film) organised by the team at Growing Well.
